Supporting Staff Wellbeing: Understanding and Managing Work-Related Stress

Work-related stress is a serious issue that can affect anyone, regardless of role or experience. In the Trust, we are committed to fostering a supportive and mentally healthy workplace for all staff.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), stress is defined as “the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them”. Employers have a legal duty to assess and manage risks to health from stress at work, just as they do for physical hazards. HSE’s Management Standards identify six key areas that can contribute to stress if not properly managed:

In partnership with guidance from Mind, the mental health charity, we also recognise that mental wellbeing is essential to a thriving workplace. Mind’s resources highlight that simple, proactive steps—such as open conversations, Wellness Action Plans, and flexible working—can significantly reduce stress and improve morale, productivity, and retention.
