Probation Policy
Starting a new role is an important transition, and our updated Probation Policy ensures that all new employees across the Trust are supported and fairly assessed during their initial months of employment.
The probation period provides a structured framework for reviewing performance, identifying training needs, and confirming suitability for the role. It applies to all new teaching and support staff, regardless of contract type, and typically lasts six months, with the possibility of extension in certain circumstances.
Key features of the policy include:
- Three formal review meetings during the probation period.
- Clear expectations around performance, conduct, and attendance.
- Supportive feedback and training opportunities.
- A fair and transparent process for managing concerns.
- Automatic completion of probation where no concerns are raised and reviews are missed.
This policy aligns with UK employment law, which currently treats probation periods as contractual rather than statutory. However, significant changes are on the horizon. Under the proposed Employment Rights Bill 2024, expected to be fully in place by 2027:
- Unfair dismissal protection will become a “day one” right, replacing the current two-year qualifying period.
- A new statutory probation period of nine months will be introduced, requiring fair procedures even in early dismissals.
- Employers will need to provide written reasons for dismissal and follow a modified process during this initial period.
These reforms aim to make workplaces fairer and more consistent, and our policy reflects best practice in preparation for these changes.
