Payroll Deductions – What You Need to Know
As part of payroll processing, certain statutory and court-ordered deductions may be applied to your salary. These deductions are required by law and cannot be altered by the employer. Common examples include:
- Attachment of Earnings Orders (AOE): Issued by a court to recover debts or fines.
- Student Loan Repayments: Applied when your earnings reach the repayment threshold set by the Student Loans Company.
- Postgraduate Loan Repayments: Similar to student loans, these are deducted once you meet the income threshold.
If you have questions about any deductions on your payslip, please contact Payroll or HR for clarification. For more information on AOEs, visit:
Government Guidance on AOEs.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Why do these deductions happen?
These deductions are legally required. AOEs are issued by a court, while student and postgraduate loan repayments are managed by the Student Loans Company based on your income.
2. Can I stop or change these deductions?
No, employers cannot cancel or amend these deductions. If you believe there is an error or need to discuss repayment terms, you must contact the issuing authority (the court for AOEs or the Student Loans Company for loans).
3. How will I know if an AOE has been applied?
You will receive a copy of the order directly from the court. The employer also receives a copy and is legally obliged to process the deduction.
4. What happens if I have multiple deductions?
Priority rules apply. For example, AOEs for fines take precedence over other deductions. Payroll will ensure compliance with these rules.
5. Who do I contact for help?
- For general queries about your payslip: Payroll or HR
- For AOEs: Contact the issuing court
- For student or postgraduate loans: Contact the Student Loans Company
