Menopause is a natural stage of life. It affects most women (and some trans and non-binary colleagues) at some point, often while still in work. Many experience little difficulty, but for others the symptoms can be challenging. We are committed to supporting you.
What we want you to know
- You do not have to struggle in silence – it is safe and encouraged to talk about it here.
- Up to one in four women describe their symptoms as severe; simple adjustments usually make a big difference.
- All line managers have received guidance and are ready to listen and help.
- Conversations are treated with sensitivity and remain confidential.
- Where symptoms are significant, they may be considered a disability under the Equality Act 2010 and reasonable adjustments will be made.
Common reasonable adjustments that colleagues have found helpful
- Access to a desk or portable fan, or a cooler working area
- Extra uniform items or permission to wear natural-fibre/cooler clothing
- More frequent or flexible breaks
- Temporary adjustment to duties (e.g. reducing very hot playground cover)
- Flexible start/finish times if sleep is affected
- Quiet space or noise-reducing headphones when concentration is difficult
- Use of the Wellness Support Plan (included in the policy) to agree what works best for you
