Manager Guidance: Apprenticeships for Your Team

Supporting Staff Development Through Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are an excellent way to develop your team’s capability, support succession planning, and fill skills gaps. They combine on‑the‑job learning with structured training delivered by accredited providers.

Apprenticeships can support:

Manager Responsibilities

Supporting an apprentice involves:

1. Approving the Development Need

Confirm that the apprenticeship aligns with:

  • The team’s objectives
  • The employee’s current or future role

2. Enabling Protected Study Time

Employees must have protected learning time.
This can include:

  • Online learning
  • Workshops
  • Shadowing
  • Assignments
  • Mentoring

3. Providing On‑the‑Job Support

How to Nominate or Support a Team Member

If a course is eligible for the apprenticeship levy, you may be able to apply for funding that is paid centrally. You will find the Apprenticeship Levy Policy below and details how to apply. Stan Mossop, Chief Finance Officer, is the main contact for Apprenticeship Levy funding: smo@bebcmat.co.uk.

Existing employees will be pad at their normal rate of pay whilst completing the apprenticeship. This will not mean that they will be promoted to a higher grade or alternative post upon completion.
